This piece is inspired by the life and work of Alfred Russel Wallace (1823 - 1913), one of the 19th century's most remarkable intellectuals, jointly publishing the theory of evolution by natural selection with Charles Darwin in 1858, amongst many other contributions to biology and beyond. Since his death his intellectual legacy has been overshadowed by Darwin’s, and as a result many of the important contributions made by Darwin’s contemporaries, like Wallace, are currently underestimated and undervalued.
‘Alf’ features images from his book ‘The Malay Archipelago’ (which was apparently Joseph Conrad’s favourite bedside reading) along with his giant bee, Chalicodoma [Megachile] Pluto, the world’s biggest bee.

This is a celebration of the international achievement to map the human genome. A truly awe-inspiring project of exploration that has been compared to the Apollo program in terms of accomplishment. The implications for the ability to treat, cure and even prevent diseases is incredibly exciting.
Each of the poles forming the structure of this sculpture represent a human chromosome, the coloured areas indicating genetic similarities between humans and mice, the study of which has the potential to help achieve these goals.

‘Glacier’ was inspired by both a song of the same name by John Grant and an image made by a scanning tunnelling microscope of a DNA molecule. The idea that an image made by an electron microscope of DNA resulted in a glacial looking landscape seemed to fit so beautifully with the song lyrics, which compare the effects of suffering upon us with the ‘spectacular landscapes’ created by glaciers.

‘Blockhead’
Hand-carved stone original
Limestone/Indian Stone
34cm x 49cm x 30cm
SOLD
Blockhead is said to have been a nickname for Leonardo Fibonacci, an Italian mathematician, credited with popularising our modern number system in the Latin-speaking world.
However, he is better remembered for the Fibonacci sequence of numbers (also the golden section or mean) that appears in nature in forms such as branching in trees, arrangement of leaves on a stem, an uncurling fern and the arrangement of a pine cone.
‘Blockhead’ incorporates the golden section (the curve on the face and the rectangular sequence on the base) along with Brāhmī Script, one of the oldest writing systems found in India on the Indian Stone base to reference the fact that the sequence has been attributed in part to the Indian Mathematics of Pingala dating back to 200 BC.
